Mental Health Matters – Pay Structure & Career Framework
Company Profile
INDUSTRY: Charity/Non-profit
NO. OF EMPLOYEES: 350
Mental Health Matters (MHM) is a national charity with over 35 years of experience in delivering high-quality mental health and social care services. MHM has a hugely positive impact on the lives of people living with mental health needs in our local communities. They provide services across England, from Northumberland to Plymouth.
Challenge
Mental Health Matters is spread across a number of different sites across the UK. MHM were needing to prioritise recruitment and retention in a time of large competition.
Also, due to the Transfer of Undertakings Protection of Employment (TUPE), the organisation also has several different terms and conditions as well as some employees being matched to the NHS Agenda for Change framework. Mental Health Matters wanted to have one framework that was consistent, reflective of the changing market conditions and enabled them to have internal equity while looking at equal pay for equal work.
Solution
Following a two-hour session, we put together MHM’s pay philosophy and a set of reward principles. As well as providing benefits benchmarking and research on generational preferences, we also used the Cendex salary survey to benchmark MHM roles against the charity and mental health industries.
They were then able to look at all their job roles within Mental Health Matters and match them to the salary survey. The calibration session that followed then led to a full report including executive benchmarking data.
After this, our team put together salary ranges and pay points for every level within the new career framework we were building for MHM. As employees would have to be transferred to a new set of pay ranges and pay points, we also carried out some cost analysis to see how much it would cost to implement. Last but not least, following three workshops with different MHM divisions, we put together a pay progression policy and framework.
Outcome
Mental Health Matters now has a more transparent and consistent way of managing pay and reward within the organisation. Their employees have access to multiple guides and videos that explain every process to them clearly – helping to build a culture of trust within Mental Health Matters.
These new policies ensure the core values of the business are reflected in everything they do, whether it be externally in the form of mental health services or internally when managing pay and reward for employees.
