Local Trust is an independent charitable foundation, established in 2012 to deliver Big Local, a National Lottery Community Fund-funded programme which committed over £1m to each of150 “left behind” neighbourhoods across England. Designed from the outset to be radically different from other funding programmes, at the heart of Big Local is a vision of empowered, resilient, dynamic, asset-rich communities making their own decisions on what is best for their area.
”3R provided a clear framework against which trustees and senior management at Local Trust could benchmark their approach to pay and reward, develop clear principles to underpin future plans, and communicate them effectively and transparently to both existing staff and potential new recruits.”
Challenge
Local Trust are a defined lifespan charity, who will spend out their funds by 2027. Against the background of an increasingly competitive employment market, they were seeking to develop approaches to recruitment and reward to ensure that they continued to attract high quality staff as their operational time horizon decreased, whilst retaining key staff to support delivery of their grant programme.
Solution
We facilitated multiple sessions with the Local Trust leadership and Board of Trustees to discuss key questions that informed the development and agreement of Local Trust’s forward-looking reward principles. Alongside this, we fully benchmarked the roles within the organisation against specific comparators for both pay and benefits, made recommendations accordingly and went on to formulate an attraction and retention plan for the organisation.
Outcome
Local Trust has increased confidence that pay and reward can be pitched at a point that is a fair reflection of the role and the market, and the particular recruitment and retention challenges that may face their organisation as it moves closer to close down. There is also a better understanding of how Local Trust might maintain capacity/institutional memory over the remainder of their operational lifespan. Finally, Local Trust are able to continue to demonstrate best practice in its pay and reward policy.
